What is a Gas Grill and Smoker Combo?

A gas grill and smoker combo is a versatile outdoor cooking appliance that combines the quick and convenient features of a gas grill with the slow, smoky cooking capabilities of a smoker. These hybrid units allow users to grill burgers, steaks, and vegetables with precision heat control, while also enabling the slow-smoking of ribs, briskets, or pulled pork using wood chips or pellets for authentic smoky flavors.

One of the primary benefits of investing in a gas grill and smoker combo is its space-saving design—ideal for patios, backyards, or limited outdoor areas. Instead of purchasing two separate appliances, you get dual functionality in one unit, making it cost-effective, convenient, and user-friendly.

As a grilling enthusiast with extensive experience testing and reviewing barbecue equipment, I’ve found that combo grills are ideal for anyone who wants flexibility in their outdoor cooking setup without compromising on quality or taste. Whether you’re hosting a backyard barbecue or slow-cooking for a special occasion, a gas grill smoker combo provides the perfect balance of ease, efficiency, and delicious results every time.

Best For

Budget-conscious grillers who want the flexibility of gas and charcoal in one affordable unit. It’s a great entry-level choice for those who are starting out with smoking or want a practical solution for both weeknight grilling and weekend BBQs.

How to Pick the Best Gas Grill and Smoker Combo?

Before buying any equipment, we should consider and evaluate the related factors. The same goes for buying a gas grill and smoker combo. In my experience, the first factors to consider are:

How to Pick the Best Gas Grill and Smoker Combo

Build Quality

Investing in a high-quality grill and smoker combo means you’ll have a durable, long-lasting appliance. I prefer to look for models made from stainless steel or heavy-duty cast iron, which retain heat well and resist rust and corrosion.

Size

The size of your gas grill and smoker combo should match the size of your cooking area and your needs.

If you regularly host large BBQ parties like me, then you should prioritize models with large cooking areas

If space is limited, measuring the size carefully before choosing a model to buy is extremely necessary. Trust me, it’s crucial to avoid the hassle of having to sell a grill that simply won’t fit!

Hopper Box/Side Box

Hopper boxes and side boxes are essential features for smoking.

  • Hooper Box: This is a separate compartment on the grill that holds charcoal designed for smoking. It is usually separate from the main grilling area to allow for separate temperature control for smoking.
  • Side box: A small, attached compartment or shelf on the side of a grill, often used to conveniently store grilling tools, spices, or food plates.

If your grill doesn’t have these features, you can still smoke using alternative methods, such as placing a pan of water inside your charcoal grill and covering it to create a smoky environment.

Technological Features

With modern technology, grills come with a wide variety of features. Whether you want a grill that you can control remotely or one that has an easy-to-read digital temperature gauge, technology will play a big role in your buying decision.

While you can always buy add-ons like a pizza oven or sear box, if you really want WIFI or Bluetooth connectivity, you’ll need to buy one with it from the get-go as it can’t be added later.

Of course, technological features aren’t the only thing to consider, but if you’re trying to decide between two similar ovens, I recommend you consider technological features.

How to Pick the Best Gas Grill and Smoker Combo

Price

Balancing budget with desired features is important. However, when choosing a Gas Grill and Smoker Combo, I think your budget should not be your biggest concern.

Remember, when you buy a Gas Grill and Smoker Combo, you are buying one appliance that can do the job of two. This means you will pay more than if you bought either one alone.

I recommend shopping with an open mind and choosing the appliance that you know will work best for your family and will last for years to come. While high-end models offer advanced features and superior build quality, there are also budget-friendly options that deliver great performance.

Balance your needs with your budget to find the best value for your money.

User Reviews and Ratings

I have a habit of reading a lot of reviews and ratings before buying anything. This helps me separate fact from fiction and determine a product’s true quality, the actual color or size is often not the same as you imagine.

However, be careful when choosing which reviews to trust because nowadays many places use fake reviews and ratings to sell products.

Frequently Asked Questions About Best Gas Grill And Smoker Combo (FAQs):

1. Are gas grill and smoker combos worth it?

Absolutely. A gas grill and smoker combo offers the convenience of quick gas grilling along with the rich, smoky flavor of charcoal or wood smoking—all in one unit. Instead of buying and storing two separate appliances, you get versatility, space-saving design, and often, better value for your money.

2. What can you cook on a grill and smoker combo?

Pretty much everything! You can grill burgers, steaks, hot dogs, and veggies over high heat—or slow-smoke ribs, brisket, pork shoulder, turkey, or chicken on the smoker side. Some models also let you roast, bake, or sear, depending on features like infrared grates or roasting baskets.

3. Which is better: a gas and charcoal combo or a gas and pellet combo?

It depends on your cooking style:

  • Gas + Charcoal: Offers traditional smoky flavor and high-temperature searing, ideal for those who enjoy hands-on grilling and adjusting airflow manually.

  • Gas + Pellet: Better for set-it-and-forget-it cooking. Pellet smokers provide consistent temperature control and richer flavor without the manual work of managing charcoal.

4. Are these grills hard to clean?

Most modern combo grills are designed with easy cleaning in mind. Look for features like slide-out grease trays, removable ash pans, and non-stick porcelain-coated grates. These make post-BBQ cleanup much simpler. Models like the Captiva Designs and Oklahoma Joe’s include full-size trays and ash collectors for quick disposal.

5. How long does a gas grill smoker combo last?

With proper care and regular maintenance, a high-quality gas grill and smoker combo can last 5 to 10 years or more. Regularly cleaning grease trays, covering the unit when not in use, and seasoning cast iron grates (if applicable) can significantly extend its lifespan.

6. Do I need electricity to use a pellet smoker combo?

Yes. Pellet smokers use electricity to operate the digital temperature control, auger, and fan system. Models like the Lifetime Gas Grill & Pellet Smoker Combo require access to an outlet for the smart features and pellet feed mechanism to work properly.

7. Is a gas grill and smoker combo worth it?

Yes, a gas grill and smoker combo is worth it for its multifunctional and convenience. It allows you to enjoy both grilling and smoking with a single unit, saving space and money.

Conclusion

After extensively researching and testing various models myself, I can confidently say that choosing the best gas grill and smoker combo can significantly enhance your BBQ experience.

Each model reviewed offers unique features and benefits tailored to different needs and preferences. Whether you’re looking for the premium technology of the Lifetime Gas Grill and Wood Pellet Smoker Combo or the adaptable, user-friendly design of the Char-Griller® Dual-Function 2-Burner, there is a perfect grill for everyone.

I’ve been interested in this type of grill for a while—one that combines pellet grilling with the convenience of gas in a single unit. I finally chose the Lifetime and couldn’t be happier! Every part was precisely drilled and fit together perfectly. The instructions were incredibly clear. Once assembled, you end up with a stunning grill that’s sturdy and well-built. I planned to assemble it indoors to avoid the TN humidity, so I unpacked everything and laid it out. My wife and I intended to tackle it together, but I got called into a long meeting. A couple of hours later, I came out of my office to find that my wife had completed the entire assembly! We plugged it in, installed the phone app, and had everything up and running in under two minutes. The grills are enamel-coated, so ditch the wire brush and opt for nylon instead. Take good care of them, and you’ll be satisfied for years to come.

My 51-year-old husband has been barbecuing since his teenage years and grills year-round. Our patio currently boasts three other BBQs and a smoker: a large stainless steel model, a heavy-duty black one that uses wood or briquets, a Traeger BBQ, and a smoker from QVC. But now, we can finally let them go because he’s replaced all our outdoor cooking gear with Pit Boss PB1230SP Wood Pellet and Gas Combo Grill. He says it’s the best he’s ever owned and absolutely LOVES it. Hallelujah! 🙂

Over the years, I’ve purchased 4 Charbroil The Big Easy TRU-Infrared units, and we love the smoky flavor it delivers without the lengthy smoking process. It’s perfect for fish, meats, poultry, and even mac and cheese. The durability is impressive—I’ve left mine outside, sometimes covered, sometimes not, and it still works flawlessly. It’s incredibly easy to use, and the inner basket is ideal for roasting whole chickens, large tri-tips, prime rib roasts, and pork loin. It’s versatile, cooking just about anything with or without smoke, all while being compact and well-designed. Happy grilling!

Pit Boss PB1230SP grill is fantastic! We were looking for something that could use propane and also offer smoking capabilities, and this grill delivers both in a sleek design. Assembly was pretty straightforward, though it helps to have two people to hold things together during the process. All the components are high-quality and heavy-duty, and everything fit together without any issues. The grill is incredibly sturdy, and even the wheels are top-notch. We’ve been smoking fish, chicken, and lamb, and everything has turned out delicious. The standard propane side works great too. I highly recommend this product!

I can’t praise Lifetime Gas Grill enough. The quality, versatility, and overall experience over the first few months have been fantastic. If you’re after a grill that offers both grilling and smoking capabilities, this is a great choice! The storage is ample, and it’s built solidly. The only downside is the app features, but that seems to be a common issue across most brands. Definitely recommend it!

Pit Boss PB1230SP smoker/grill is fantastic! It’s the best one I’ve ever owned. The smoker works perfectly, and it’s very easy to use. I’m extremely impressed. It’s one of the best purchases I’ve made, and absolutely worth the price. I suggest getting a friend to help with assembly and setting aside some time for the setup. Even with that, it’s been an incredible addition to my backyard deck, and the effort and cost are well worth it.

I’ve always had an offset smoker in my backyard, but after moving to a new house, I decided to give the Pit Boss pellet smoker a try. So far, I’m really impressed! The best feature is definitely the lever that lets you open up the firebox to expose the flames – a game changer for pellet smokers. Setup was straightforward, and by simply following the instructions for the initial use, everything went smoothly. Since then, I’ve been smoking as much as possible, and I’m loving it!
